Respect Our Town, Protect Our Wildlife

THE GULL INITIATIVE

RESIDENTS

We know how frustrating the gull problem can be—bin bags torn open, noise, mess, and damage to property. One of the most effective ways to reduce these issues is to avoid feeding gulls and to make sure waste is securely stored. Please use gull-proof bags or secure bins, and help us keep our streets clean by reporting any problem areas. Your efforts make a real difference in protecting our neighbourhoods.

BUSINESSES

Local businesses play a key role in helping manage the town’s gull problem. Please ensure bins are kept closed and waste is not left out unprotected. Where possible, use gull-proof sacks to secure rubbish awaiting collection. If you serve food outdoors,  cleaning up promptly will avoid attracting gulls. Your support is essential in maintaining a clean and welcoming environment for all.

VISITORS

Welcome to St Andrews! While you're enjoying our beautiful town, please help us look after it by not feeding the gulls. Feeding them encourages aggressive behaviour and contributes to mess and nuisance in public spaces. Dispose of food waste in proper bins and keep picnic areas tidy. A little care goes a long way in preserving the charm of St Andrews for everyone.

About Us

Every summer, hundreds of gulls flock to St Andrews to nest and breed. While gulls have always been part of the town’s seasonal wildlife, their numbers have significantly increased over the past decade – to the point where they’re now causing problems both for the town and for their own wellbeing.

As you might imagine, a diet of leftover chips, ice cream, and general rubbish isn’t exactly natural for a seabird. Gulls would be far healthier if they weren’t tempted by the excesses of our throwaway culture.

BID St Andrews are working to raise awareness about the impact of gull feeding and how we can all help to create a more harmonious town for everyone- including the gulls!

How Can You Help?

Love St Andrews? Help us keep it clean and safe for all! While gulls can be a nuisance, it's important to remember that they are protected birds under UK law, meaning it's illegal to harm them or their nests without special permission. That’s why prevention is key—by securing your waste, never feeding gulls, and keeping outdoor areas clean, you help remove the easy food sources that attract them. You can also support local efforts to deter nesting in safe, legal ways and report issues like overflowing bins .

Every small step helps keep St Andrews a beautiful place to live, work, and enjoy.

Seagulls have excellent vision, owing to the high number of photoreceptor cells in their eyes, allowing them to spot food from high altitudes
